This question depends on how long you are going to stop. A couple of days won't set you back, but if you continue not to work out you're improvements will slowly diminish in a matter of weeks.Research indicates that most of the benefits from exercising are lost in a matter of 2 weeks to three months no matter how long or how hard you have been working out.

The good news is that you can preserve your hard earned improvements when you don't exercise as much, by cutting back. Instead of stopping completely and letting all your hard earned fitness levels fade away try following a maintenance program. If you're used to doing aerobics 4 times a week for 30-60 minutes, try doing 30 minutes 2 times a week, or four, 15 minute workouts. You can maintain your fitness up to 12 weeks. If you want to preserve your strength, instead of doing your 3-4 days a week of weight training, try a 2 day a week circuit training program that is high in intensity. You may find that you haven't lost anything at all when you return back to your normal schedule, or you may have just lost a minor amount.
