By Elena Voropay A vegetarian diet is mostly based on plants.Plant foods have potent phytochemicals, vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants which help protect against disease, boost immunity and give natural energy we need to keep our bodies healthy and alive. So, what 'vegetarian diet' really means? But there different types of vegetarian diets, depending on how many foods of animal origin are included. Here are some of the popular types.
Vegetarian diet is mostly based on plants, but there different types of vegetarian diets, depending on how many foods of animal origin are included. Lacto-vegetarian (lacto- dairy) diet permits milk and milk product, but not eggs or meat or fish. Ovo-vegetarian (ovo – eggs) diet includes eggs, but excludes meat or dairy products. Lacto-ovovegetarian (lacto – dairy; ovo – eggs) diet includes eggs, milk, and milk products, but meat or fish is not allowed. Pure vegetarian diet excludes all animal flesh, including poultry, game, fish, shellfish or crustacea, and all slaughter by-products. Dairy and eggs are not in the ration as well, however, some may include these occasionally. Semi-vegetarian diet occasionally include dairy, eggs, fish and perhaps chicken, but restrict red meat and pork. Vegan diet is similar to Pure vegetarian, but everything consumed comes from plants only. Dairy products, eggs and products from animal labor, such as honey may are also avoided. Many vegans also choose to avoid wearing clothing that has involved the death of animals, such as leather and fur. Pescatarian or Pesco-vegetarian diet implies that seafood is acceptable while land-dwelling animals are not. Generally these arguments fall into two categories: the ethics of slaughtering and consuming animals don't apply to sea-dwelling creatures, or the environmental ethics of sea-dwelling creatures is acceptable. Other animal products like eggs and dairy may be part of a pescetarian diet. Pollo-vegerarian or quasi-vegetarian diet includes fish and poultry, but not mammalian meat such as beef, pork, and lamb. Some may pollo-vegetarians consume chicken. As with lacto-ovo vegetarianism, there are usually no restrictions on non-flesh animal products such as dairy and eggs. Fruitarian diet is a strict form of Vegan diet that is limited to eating the ripe fruits of plants and trees. Some fruitarians will eat only crops that fall naturally from a plant or can be harvested without killing the plant. These foods consist primarily of culinary fruits, nuts, and seeds. Many do not eat grains or seeds. There are fruitarians who believe they should eat only plants that spread seeds when the plant is eaten. Many fruitarians use the botanical definitions of fruits and consume pulses, while others include green leafy and/or root vegetables in their diet. Interestingly, variations on Frutarian diet may permit occasional consumption of some dairy products as well. |
