I know snacking on nuts should be good for me, but I'm allergic. Are there any good substitutes? |

Nuts are often advised for their beneficial fats, the polyunsaturated kind which helps to fight heart disease, removes cholesterol from the arteries, and acts as anti-inflammatory agent. However, many people are allergic or intolerant to nuts. But there are, what I call, Five Great Foods which can easily substitute the heavy nuts and still give great benefits.
They are: - Flaxmeal (one tablespoon)
- Olives (eight large)
- Avocado (two tablespoons)
- Pumpkin seeds (one tablespoon)
- Sunflower seeds (one tablespoon)
All are good healthy-fat nut replacements. Each serving has about 5 grams of unsaturated fat and 45 calories. Protein- and fiber-packed roasted soybeans or dried plums are also good portable substitutes. By Elena Voropay |
