How To Choose A Health Club PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 04 May 2006

So, you've decided to join a fitness center. But the number of health clubs to choose from is just mind-boggling. And while one club may be the absolute best for your friend, it can be inappropriate for you. How do you choose? These three easy tips will help you to make the selection so you can make your fitness commitment a long-term enjoyable experience.

Convenience and Location

If you want your fitness commitment to last, you need to make it enjoyable and convenient. It is best achieved if your health club is located close to home or work and be easily accessable. A far away facility may take a lot of commuting time, and if your inspiration and dedication will motivate you to travel the distance at first, after a while it may require a big lifestyle change just to find time for the road. The more convenient the location of the club, the less likely you are to find excuses not to go there. Check to be sure that the facility offers parking or is within a walking distance. Also, confirm that opening hours and class times work within your busy schedule or you may have a hard time prioritizing your workouts over other enjoyable activities.

Your Needs and Priorities

What is the main reason you decided to join the club and how do you plan to achieve it? If you are looking for some social interaction, look for the culture of the club, atmosphere Are the staff and members friendly and open to talk or do they mean strictly business and look self-reserved? If your main purpose is to get fit, then you need to look at the list of services provided, such as an eclectic mix of fitness classes you like, appropriate weight training machines, user-friendly swimming pool and sauna, a range of cardio equipment, etc. Make a list of the things that are important to you and check that the health club meets your needs.

Try Before You Buy
Sales staff are usually well trained in promoting their club and selling memberships promising to match your every request. However, it may take some time for you to get the real feel of the gym, see whether or not you like the fitness classes offered and if the training equipment is available at your visiting times. Hygene, maintenance, availability of services and utilities, culture and environment are all very important if you want to make a regular visit and make each workout enjoyable and satisfying. Before you make a long-term commitment, ask for a trial membership. Good fitness centres use these as an opportunity to persuade potential members to join. You may even ask other members if they are satisfied with the centre and what they like best about it. And before you sign any contracts, find out exactly what your membership fee includes and what are the options for cancellation if you would need or choose to change the facility.
