Intelligent Muscle

ImageWelcome to your own body! I'm sure many of you don't really care too much about anatomy and physiology, but it is one of the most intriguing and fascinating aspects about life and living. Every breath you take, every step you make, every bite you eat requires energy. Where do you get it from? Getting energy and keeping it for as long as possible is not as easy as taking a shower, having a good night's sleep and eating healthy foods. There is a complex machinery inside your body which governs every process.

You can learn a lot from magazines and people around you, but usually you only learn 'what', and not 'why'. Heck, this is what most of people want to know – what to do to make it work. And this is the end of the story. But to know what to do, you need to figure out why it works so you can best make your own decisions on what works for you. Everyone is different, I said it millions of times, and the same things that made your friend toned and slim may not work for you. Which leads me to another very important point I'd like to mention before moving on.

There are no absolute truths in health, fitness, or bodybuilding! I hope to give you enough information so that you could possibly answer some of the 'why' questions yourself. Hopefully you will gain an understanding of how the body works, and in turn, understand how and why certain supplements, training techniques and diets do and don't work. This knowledge will help you make more educated decisions when designing a program or choosing the foods you eat. Plus, just by spending a few minutes learning more about your own body is a great tool to use when you get into a debate with someone who thinks they've got ALL the answers. I am no expert, and I don't claim to 'know' everything or even anything. I can only convey to you what I have read, what I believe, and what my interpretations are from my readings. I don't fabricate my information and get it from reliable sources, and pass it on to you!

  • Metabolism and Hormones  ( 3 items )

The cells of your restless body must continually respond to changing conditions of the external and internal environment and have a mechanism where the responses of millions to many billions of cells are integrated in beneficial ways. This crucial integration depends upon hormones, neurotransmitters, local signalling molecules, and pheromones. These are the body's regulators of all functions of your system which are produced in two major inter-related control systems: the nervous system and the hormonal, or endocrine, system.

Molecular changes in the muscle begin within just 2 - 4 weeks after beginning of the weight training- much earlier than previously thought. What's more, the muscles appear to respond to even limited weight training. The most pronounced and noteworthy changes in your endocrine system occur in rising levels of several hormones, the powerful chemical messengers which help keep your body working optimally. As your metabolism is a complex busy working mechanism of growth (anabolism) and destruction (catabolism), the hormones which make these reactions possible are called anabolic and catabolic hormones.

The definition of anabolic is “to build up” and this is precisely what anabolic hormones do. With a little help from good rest and proper nutrition, the anabolic hormones help build all kinds of body tissue, such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, hair and nails. These also help you burn body fat, control tissue repair, immune response as well as lipid and blood sugar metabolism. The famous anabolic mix includes Growth Hormone (hGH), Insulin-Like Growth Factors (IGFs), Testosterone and Insulin. All of these will help expand and strengthen muscles, tendons, ligaments, and everything else you want enlarged.

Today we seem to know so much about our anatomy and physiology, that the most complicated terms are used in our everyday language. Just about every advertisement you see on TV or in a popular magazine drops a few sentences about cellular growth, immunity, ATP formation, functions of various organs, hormonal input, metabolic reactions, neuro-endocrine support, enzyme insufficiency and so on. Moreover, the narrator tells you why and how the featured product works in the body and – the best part – most people can understand and make the connection based on their understanding of biological basics. What is intriguing is that we are only starting to grasp the very elementary levels of the body's organization and the more we learn, the greater the gaps in our knowledge become.
