If you are young and healthy, you probably rarely think of taking dietary supplements. You may consider that your diet is healthy enough, but vegetables and dairy food can only be as good as the soil in which they are grown and many farmers will agree that their soil is worn out. And when you get sick, the search for a quick-fix pill or any kind of dietary supplement may begin too late. No dietary supplement can provide eternal youth or perfect health, but with the assiduous use of vitamins and minerals and balanced nutritious diet, you can often achieve optimum health for your age and certainly ease the symptoms of many potential and existing diseases. Dietary supplements can be divided into two main types; nutritional, (vitamins and minerals and amino acids) and botanical (herbal types).

Vitamin D - Controvercies |

Supplements

Vitamin D, calciferol, is a fat-soluble vitamin. It is found in food, but also can be made in your body after exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun (1,2). Vitamin D exists in several forms, each with a different activity. Some forms are relatively inactive in the body, and have limited ability to function as a vitamin. The liver and kidney help convert vitamin D to its active hormone form. (3). The major biologic function of vitamin D is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus (4). Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium, helping to form and maintain strong bones. It promotes bone mineralization in concert with a number of other vitamins, minerals, and hormones. Without vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle, soft, or misshapen. Vitamin D prevents rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults, which are skeletal diseases that result in defects that weaken bones (5,6). |

Supplements

By Elena Voropay Vitamins are organic substances that are present in minute quantities in foodstuffs and are required for metabolism. Most plants can synthesize all vitamins they need, but human bodies cannot make them and must rely on dietary intake. Vitamins yeild no energy for the body, but they facilitate energy-yielding chemical reaction and promote body growth and development. Deficiencies in vitamins are still seen around the world today. Just about everyone should take a multivitamin pill once a day as insurance. |

ANABOLIC STEROIDS: Side Effects |
|
|
Supplements
|
Anabolic steroids (AS) are effective in enhancing athletic performance. The trade off, however, is the occurrence of adverse side effects which can jeopardize health. Since AS have effects on several organ systems, a myriad of side effects can be found. In general, the orally administered AS have more adverse effects than parenterally administered AS. In addition, the type of AS is not only important for the advantageous effects, but also for the adverse effects. Especially the AS containing a 17-alkyl group have potentially more adverse affects, in particular to the liver. One of the problems with athletes, in particular strength athletes and bodybuilders, is the use of oral and parenteral AS at the same time ("stacking"), and in dosages which may be several (up to 40 times) the recommended therapeutical dosage. The frequency and severity of side effects is quite variable. It depends on several factors such as type of drug, dosage, duration of use and the individual sensitivity and response. |
